7 Steps to Keep Your Commercial Public Restroom Clean

A public restroom must be tidy at all times. It affects your image and the health of your customers and employees. Public restrooms must be regularly cleaned and sanitized. This is especially true for retail, office, and restaurant environments where restrooms are more prone to germs and bacteria buildup due to the number of people using them. To make the task easier, a commercial restroom cleaning checklist comes in handy.

Importance of a Cleaning Checklist

As we mentioned, how clean or dirty a restroom is affecting the image of your business. If there’s a public restroom in your establishment, expect to get a lot of traffic. With more people using it, all the more reason to keep it clean and sanitized. This is not only for your company’s benefit – including ROI -, but also to make sure you abide by all the laws you need, and again: protect public health. In this article, we’ve prepared a public restroom sanitation and cleaning checklist to make your employees’ task a lot easier. Add, modify, or adjust as necessary. Make this checklist your own.

Steps in Cleaning Public Restrooms

Before we head to the checklist, let us have an overview of cleaning public restrooms. Follow these steps to make the cleaning process faster and more organized:

1.Put up signs.

Safety first. The first thing you should do is put up cautionary signs at the bathroom and the entrance. A simple sign like “Caution: Wet Floor” will do. This is to prevent any accident and slip from happening.

2.Dust before sweeping.

Dust everything first before sweeping the floor: countertops, vents, ceiling, fixtures, etc. Sweep the floor afterward. Finish off with emptying the trash bin. Replace the bin’s lining.

3.Regularly refill sanitary essentials.

Anyone who uses the restroom has to have access to sanitary essentials. Make sure that you keep your supply of paper towels, toilet papers, soap, and sanitizers in check. Refill as necessary.

4.Scrub and disinfect urinals and toilets.

Toilets and urinals are the dirtiest part of the restroom. Make sure that you regularly clean these. Scrub them thoroughly and disinfect them afterward. This should be done daily for public restrooms.

5.Clean countertops, sinks, and mirrors.

Other bacteria-prone areas in the restroom are sinks, mirrors, and countertops. To clean these, spray them first with an anti-bacterial disinfectant. Let the disinfectant sit there for a while. Then wipe them clean with a damp cloth or towel. Remove all fingerprints, smudges, stains, and other marks.

6.Clean fixtures and walls.

Regularly wipe down the fixtures, bathroom partitions, knobs, doors, and walls. Make sure that you remove the grime, stains, fingerprints, and other marks

7. Mop the restroom floor.

The floor must be mopped thoroughly. When mopping, start from the innermost and work your way towards the door. Let the floor dry completely before letting anyone in.

Daily restroom cleaning checklist

Make sure that you do these at least once a daily:

  • Check toilet paper, paper towel, and soap. Restock as necessary.
  • Restock vending machines if low.
  • Wipe the countertops.
  • Empty out trash receptacles. Reline if needed.
  • Clean the urinals and toilets.
  • Sweep the floor.
  • Spot clean the floor.

Weekly commercial restroom cleaning

Aside from daily cleaning, a weekly cleaning routine is also necessary. These are tasks you need to do weekly either with your own employees or with the help of commercial restroom cleaners:

  • Dust the vents.
  • Wipe and polish the mirrors, brightwork, and faucets.
  • Disinfect flat surfaces.
  • Clean urinals and toilets in and out.
  • Remove watermarks and clean off the spots.
  • Scrub the countertops and sinks.
  • Sweep and then mop the floors.
  • Vacuum carpeted areas.

Deep restroom cleaning

While regularly cleaning does the job, deep cleaning is still necessary. Depending on your public restroom’s traffic, you need to get deep restroom cleaning services once or twice a year. It focuses on cleaning hard-to-reach and overlooked areas and includes:

  • Removing stains from toilet bowls and sinks.
  • Cleaning and scrubbing all grout.
  • Cleaning and clearing drain.
  • Removing calcium build-up.
  • Washing walls and stall partitions.

Take note that before you resort to deep cleaning, you must have already done the daily and weekly cleaning checklist.

Use this public restroom cleaning checklist as a guide. You can modify it to suit your demands. The more traffic the restroom has, the more thorough should be the cleaning. Utilize this checklist and guide to keep your restroom fresh and clean. Sanitize it regularly to keep the dirt, germs, and bacteria away.

By doing so, you will not only keep your patrons and employees safe and comfortable. In effect, you will boost the professional image of your establishment. If you need professional help – let us know!
